In a remarkable display of visionary leadership, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has been named New Telegraph Governor of the Year 2025 in Education, a testament to his unwavering commitment to transforming the state’s education sector.

Within a remarkably short period, Governor Okpebholo has injected new life into Edo’s educational landscape, addressing long-standing structural challenges and injecting much-needed reforms. His approach, anchored on access, quality, welfare, and sustainability, has yielded tangible results, making education a beacon of hope for the state’s future.

The numbers tell a compelling story: over 100 schools constructed, 6,000 teachers recruited, and institutional funding increased exponentially. Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, saw its monthly subvention jump from ₦41 million to ₦500 million, while Edo University, Iyamho, received a boost from ₦25 million to ₦250 million.

But it’s not just about numbers; it’s about people. The governor’s focus on student welfare has led to the reintroduction of bursary payments, discontinued for over 20 years, and strategic partnerships with NELFUND, ensuring no student drops out due to financial constraints.

Governor Okpebholo’s vision extends beyond borders, with international partnerships opening doors to global opportunities. The launch of EdoCert 2.0, a certificate digitisation platform, has enhanced transparency and credibility, making Edo-issued academic certificates globally accepted.

This award is more than a recognition; it’s a validation of a reform agenda that prioritises learning, equity, and future readiness. As Edo State becomes a reference point for education reform in Nigeria, one thing is clear: Governor Okpebholo is driving an educational renaissance, and the future looks brighter than ever.
