Abuja, February 5, 2026 — The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday adjourned plenary deliberations on the proposed amendments to the Electoral Act following extensive debates on key provisions of the legislation, which is widely regarded as central to the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic process.

The adjournment, lawmakers clarified, was necessitated by the need for further consultations and deeper consideration of critical sections of the bill, rather than any intention to suspend or abandon the reform process. Senate leaders emphasized that the pause would allow members to refine their positions and ensure that the final legislation reflects national consensus and best democratic practices.

Reacting to the development, Senator Joseph Igiagbe Ikpea, representing Edo Central Senatorial District, assured his constituents that deliberations on the Electoral Act remain a priority for the Senate and will resume when plenary reconvenes.

“The decision to adjourn is to ensure that we get it right,” Senator Ikpea stated. “This legislation directly affects the integrity of our elections and the future of our democracy. It is important that every provision is carefully examined in the best interest of the Nigerian people.”

Senator Ikpea reaffirmed his commitment to supporting electoral reforms that strengthen transparency, credibility, and fairness in Nigeria’s electoral system. He further pledged to continue actively representing the views and concerns of the people of Edo Central throughout the legislative process.

As a key stakeholder from Edo State, Senator Ikpea noted that credible elections remain vital to deepening democratic governance and development across Edo Central Senatorial District, Edo State, and the nation at large. He assured constituents that their voices will be reflected in ongoing Senate engagements on the bill.

The Senator also committed to keeping the public informed on all developments relating to the Electoral Act and other legislative matters before the National Assembly, thanking constituents for their trust, support, and continued civic engagement.

Deliberations on the Electoral Act are expected to resume when the Senate reconvenes, as lawmakers work toward passing a robust framework that aligns with global democratic standards and the aspirations of Nigerians.
