The Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, Hon. Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, has been removed from office following an impeachment vote by members of the local government’s legislative arm.
The impeachment was conveyed in a letter signed by seven councillors and dated January 28, 2026, with immediate effect.
The development occurred just hours after members of the Edo State House of Assembly reportedly failed to resolve the lingering crisis between the chairman and the councillors during a peace meeting convened to address the dispute.
According to sources familiar with the matter, tensions escalated after three councillors, who were absent from the reconciliation meeting, allegedly attempted to initiate the removal of the seven councillors. The seats of the three councillors were subsequently declared vacant.
Following the development, the seven councillors reportedly proceeded to Igarra, the headquarters of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, where they formally issued the impeachment notice against the chairman.
In the letter, the councillors accused Hon. Oshionogue of abuse of office, high-handedness, embezzlement of council funds, anti-party activities, financial recklessness, forgery, and persistent disobedience to constituted authorities.
The letter read in part:
“We, the undersigned members of Akoko Edo Local Government Area Legislative Arm, hereby impeach you as the Acting Local Government Council Chairman with effect from today, the 28th January, 2026.”
Meanwhile, a viral video circulating on social media showed the moment the impeached chairman was allegedly booed out of the council premises by a crowd following the announcement of his removal.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the state government were unsuccessful, as the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, did not respond to repeated calls as of the time of filing this report.
Hon. Oshionogue has also yet to issue an official statement on the impeachment.
