Abuja, January 25, 2026 — The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasized the importance of preserving human agency as artificial intelligence continues to transform global education systems.
In a message marking the International Day of Education 2026, Senator Tinubu urged governments, educators, and stakeholders to reflect on the year’s theme, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.” She described education as a critical tool for equipping individuals with the knowledge, values, creativity, and ethical judgment required to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
The First Lady stressed that while artificial intelligence and technological innovation offer significant opportunities, they must remain tools that serve humanity rather than replace human decision-making and values.
“As we embrace artificial intelligence and innovation, we must ensure that technology serves humanity, not the other way around,” she stated, adding that humans must continue to guide AI development in ways that uphold ethical standards and support sustainable development.
Focusing on Nigeria’s national priorities, Senator Tinubu reaffirmed the country’s commitment to investing in quality and inclusive education, noting that such investments are essential to empowering children and young people. According to her, education must foster critical thinking, responsible citizenship, and the confidence needed to navigate future challenges with compassion and integrity.
She concluded her message by extending goodwill to Nigerians and the global community in celebration of the International Day of Education, reiterating the shared responsibility of safeguarding human values in an era of rapid technological advancement.
The International Day of Education, observed annually on January 24, highlights education’s central role in peace, development, and human progress worldwide.
