Edo State Bolsters Security in Edo Central Senatorial District with Patrol Vehicles and Enhanced Welfare Measures

By Urbanscoopnews, Irrua, Edo State – January 17, 2026

In a decisive move to strengthen internal security and restore peace across Edo Central Senatorial District, Governor Monday Okpebholo has officially handed over ten state-of-the-art patrol vehicles to local security agencies. The initiative underscores his administration’s commitment to a zero-tolerance approach to crime and criminality.

The handover ceremony, held in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area, drew traditional rulers, political leaders, security stakeholders, and community representatives. The event also formed part of Governor Okpebholo’s ongoing interactive security engagements aimed at identifying operational challenges, fostering collaboration, and deploying targeted solutions across communities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the initiative is strategic, not merely symbolic. “This is not just about handing over vehicles. It is about understanding what our security personnel face on the ground and responding directly. Security is the foundation of development, and we will not compromise the safety of our people,” he said.

The Governor outlined that successful implementation requires cooperation with local government chairmen, including submitting names of security personnel from the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC), Hunters Association, and Anti-Cultism Units for profiling and integration into the payroll. He noted that the administration previously established a committee that trained 2,500 security corps members, who will now be incorporated into existing ESSC structures. “With this number, each local government area should have over 3,000 security personnel,” the Governor added.

During the interactive session, representatives from across the Esan region highlighted several operational challenges, including logistics gaps, inadequate equipment, herdsmen-related security threats, intelligence deficiencies, and the urgent need for improved mobility and communication tools.

Director of Operations, Edo State Security Corps, Mr. Richard Balogun, announced that salaries for security operatives have now been approved, ending months of uncertainty for personnel serving in high-risk environments. He commended the state government for its renewed commitment to crime fighting and personnel welfare. “This is a clear demonstration that the government values the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform. Improved welfare and logistics will significantly enhance our operational effectiveness,” Balogun stated.

Edo Central APC Senatorial Leader, Major General Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd), called for sustained logistical support, operational funding, and intelligence tools. He further urged traditional rulers and community leaders to actively participate in security efforts, including profiling suspicious persons and monitoring vehicles entering their communities. “Our communities must become the first line of defence. If we work together, criminals will have no safe haven in Edo Central,” he emphasized.

His Royal Highness Anselm Aidenojie II, the Onojie of Uromi, praised Governor Okpebholo’s hands-on leadership style and described the administration’s security strategy as “practical, inclusive, and results-driven.” He also revealed plans by traditional rulers and Esan leaders in the diaspora to establish an Esan Security Trust Fund, aimed at mobilizing financial and material support for security operations. “This is a collective responsibility. Our people must be able to sleep with their eyes closed, knowing that their safety is guaranteed,” he said.

The Governor’s initiative, combining enhanced mobility, operational resources, and personnel welfare, marks a significant milestone in Edo State’s efforts to maintain public safety and secure communities in Edo Central Senatorial District.
