Gov Okpebholo Calls for Increased Support for Nigerian Armed Forces on Armed Forces Remembrance Day

Kingsley Ohens reporting

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called for enhanced support for the Nigerian Armed Forces in recognition of their sacrifices toward preserving the unity and territorial integrity of the nation.

The governor made the call on Thursday during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held at the Museum Ground, Oba Ovonramwen Square, Benin City. The annual event is dedicated to honouring fallen heroes who paid the supreme price in defence of Nigeria.

Governor Okpebholo, while addressing journalists after the wreath-laying ceremony, paid glowing tribute to members of the Armed Forces who lost their lives in the line of duty. He noted that the nation remains indebted to their courage and selflessness.

“We are here today to honour our fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for the continuous existence and unity of Nigeria. We gather to remember them and pray that their souls rest in peace. We also pray that God grants their families the strength to bear the irreparable loss,” the governor said.

He further urged serving military personnel to remain committed and patriotic in the discharge of their duties, assuring them that their sacrifices would not go unrecognized.

“I appeal to those still in active service to continue to give their best in serving their fatherland. I believe that God will preserve Nigeria and continue to honour both the living and the dead who have made great sacrifices to keep the nation united,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, the Edo State Coordinator of the Military Widows Association, Mrs. Umar Sheriffat, appealed to government at all levels to sustain and expand support for widows of fallen soldiers.

She called on relevant authorities to formally recognize military widows and empower them economically to enable them adequately cater for the children left behind by their deceased spouses.

In a similar vein, a retired Major of the Nigerian Army, Joe Koma, urged the government to improve welfare packages for retired military personnel, stressing that such measures would boost the morale of officers still in active service.

“We have sacrificed our lives for Nigeria and we deserve better care. While pensions are being paid regularly, there is a need for an upward review to reflect current economic realities,” he said.

The event featured the traditional laying of wreaths by government officials, security agencies, and veterans’ groups, as well as prayers for peace, unity, and national stability.

The report was issued by Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State.
