Okpebholo Assures Edo Residents of Safety, Intensifies Crackdown on Kidnapping and Violent Crime

Benin City, January 10, 2026 — The Edo State Government has reassured residents of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, as Governor Monday Okpebholo vowed to decisively confront kidnapping, cultism, and other forms of criminality across the state.

Governor Okpebholo gave the assurance amid rising public concern over security challenges, stressing that his administration has already made significant investments in modern security infrastructure, intelligence-led policing, and strengthened inter-agency collaboration to tackle criminal activities.

According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, the governor disclosed that security operations are ongoing statewide and are already yielding positive results, particularly in the fight against kidnapping.

“The issue of kidnapping is being addressed with the seriousness and strategic focus it deserves,” the governor said, adding that security matters often require discretion, as public disclosure of operational details could compromise effectiveness.

While affirming the government’s respect for citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful protest, Governor Okpebholo cautioned against attempts by individuals or groups to exploit public sentiment as a means to undermine peace and stability in the state.

“This administration will not allow criminals or their sponsors to take Edo State hostage,” the governor declared. “Anyone involved in kidnapping, cultism, or any form of criminal activity will be tracked down and brought to justice. There will be no hiding place for perpetrators.”

Governor Okpebholo urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, encouraging them to go about their lawful daily activities with confidence, as the government remains firmly in control of the security situation.

He also called on citizens to actively support security agencies by providing credible intelligence and refusing to harbour or shield criminals within their communities.

The Edo State Government reaffirmed its resolve to restore lasting peace and security across the state, emphasizing its commitment to building a safe, stable, and prosperous environment for all residents.
