The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a strong caution against external interference in the internal affairs of Venezuela, reaffirming its commitment to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-intervention as enshrined in international law.
In a statement reflecting the bloc’s longstanding position on global governance, ECOWAS emphasized that the political future of Venezuela must be determined solely by its people through peaceful and inclusive processes, free from external pressure or coercion. The regional body underscored that respect for national sovereignty remains a cornerstone of international relations and a prerequisite for global stability.
ECOWAS further noted that unilateral actions, sanctions, or foreign interventions risk deepening tensions and exacerbating humanitarian and political challenges rather than contributing to lasting solutions. The bloc called on all international actors to prioritize dialogue, diplomacy, and multilateral engagement in addressing the situation in Venezuela.
Reaffirming its support for the United Nations Charter, ECOWAS stressed the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means and encouraged continued international cooperation aimed at fostering understanding and mutual respect among nations. The organization also highlighted the need for constructive engagement that supports stability, development, and the well-being of the Venezuelan population.
The statement aligns with ECOWAS’s broader advocacy for a rules-based international order and its consistent opposition to actions that undermine the sovereignty of states, regardless of region. As global attention remains focused on Venezuela, the West African bloc reiterated its call for restraint and responsible international conduct in the interest of peace and security.
