The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will not allow himself to be politically sidelined ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the statement while speaking with political associates, amid growing discussions about realignments and power struggles within Nigeria’s political space as parties begin early positioning for the next election cycle.
“I will not allow myself to be buried politically in 2027,” the former Rivers State governor said, a remark widely seen as a response to speculations surrounding his political future and influence.
Wike, a key figure in Nigerian politics, has remained at the centre of national attention following his appointment as FCT minister by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite being a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His role in the current administration has continued to generate debate within political circles, particularly within the PDP.
Political observers interpret Wike’s statement as a signal of intent to remain relevant and influential, either as a power broker or a central participant in political negotiations ahead of the elections. Analysts note that his strong political structure and national visibility position him as a significant player in any future political configuration.
Although Wike did not disclose specific plans regarding the 2027 elections, his comments suggest an early move to assert relevance as Nigeria’s political environment becomes increasingly competitive.
The 2027 general elections are still more than a year away, but political activities and alignments have already begun to take shape across the country, with major actors seeking to secure strategic advantage.
