Yobe State, Nigeria — January 4 — At least 25 people have been confirmed dead, while 14 others remain missing, after a canoe carrying dozens of passengers capsized in Yobe State, triggering a major search and rescue operation.

The incident occurred along the Yobe River when the wooden canoe, reportedly transporting over 50 passengers, overturned mid-journey while traveling between riverine communities. Victims were said to be mostly local farmers, traders, and fishermen returning from their daily activities.
Emergency responders, including officials of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), security operatives, and community volunteers, were immediately mobilized to the scene. As of press time, 13 passengers have been rescued alive and taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while recovery efforts continue for those still unaccounted for.

Authorities said search operations are ongoing, with divers and rescue teams combing the river despite challenging conditions. The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and handed over to families for burial in accordance with local customs.
Although the exact cause of the accident has not been officially determined, preliminary reports suggest overloading and poor safety measures may have contributed to the tragedy. Eyewitnesses also noted the absence of life jackets among passengers.
The Yobe State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the victims. Officials have reiterated calls for stricter enforcement of water transport safety regulations, including the use of life jackets and adherence to passenger limits, to prevent future disasters.
The tragedy highlights the persistent risks associated with inland water transportation in rural communities, where boats remain a primary means of travel despite limited safety oversight.
