Abuja, Nigeria — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified that it has not released any official timetable for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, putting to rest speculations circulating in parts of the public domain.
INEC made this known on January 2nd, 2026, stressing that preparations for the 2027 polls are still at an early stage and that any official schedule would be formally communicated through its established channels when due.
According to the Commission, the release of an election timetable is guided by constitutional provisions and the Electoral Act, which stipulate clear timelines for the conduct of elections and related activities. INEC emphasized that it remains committed to transparency and due process in managing Nigeria’s electoral calendar.
“The Commission wishes to inform the public that no timetable has been issued for the 2027 general election,” INEC said in a brief statement. “When the timetable is ready, it will be made public through official announcements.”
The clarification follows reports and unofficial documents circulating on social media suggesting proposed dates for the next general election. INEC cautioned political parties, stakeholders, and the general public against relying on unverified information, urging them to seek updates only from credible and official sources.
Nigeria’s general elections are conducted every four years, with INEC responsible for organizing presidential, gubernatorial, National Assembly, and state assembly polls across the country. The last general election was held in 2023.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to delivering credible, free, and fair elections and assured Nigerians that adequate notice would be given ahead of the 2027 polls in line with the law
